Chapter 4 – Survivor’s Day

A week later, at Cangnan City No.2 Middle School.

"Hey, is that person from our school? Why is there a cloth covering his eyes?"

"He's wearing our school uniform, so he must be from our school."

"He's also holding a blind cane, seems like he's blind."

"Weird, why haven't we seen him before?"

"He's probably a new freshman this year, right?"

"I have to say, with those black cloths wrapped around his eyes, he actually looks quite handsome."

"But how does a blind person attend classes? I don't think our school has special classes for them."

"I don't know."

"…"

As expected, as soon as Lin Qiye walked through the school gate, he attracted a lot of attention.

But for scenes like this, Lin Qiye had experienced too many of them. He walked through the Maple Leaf Avenue of the school as if no one else was there, heading towards the direction of the teaching building.

Speaking of which, Lin Qiye had prepared himself to face those troublemakers before coming here. After all, in many brainless novels, there would definitely be a few so-called "school bullies" who would mock and ridicule him, setting the stage for him to show off later…

However, those troublemakers didn't appear. Instead, many students approached him voluntarily, asking if he needed any help.

This made Lin Qiye feel somewhat lost.

Thinking about it, these were all modern students who had gone through nine years of compulsory education. How could there be so many troublemakers who didn't know any better? Besides, even if there were such groups, they now valued "brotherhood" and would help their friends settle matters on ordinary days. It was fine to vent their frustrations, but if they really bullied a disabled person, they would be drowned in spit the next day, completely ruining their reputation.

Lin Qiye walked up the stairs and quickly found his own classroom, Class 2 of Grade 2. He had already spent a year in a special school for his first year of high school, and now that he had transferred, he was considered a new student.

Based on most TV dramas and novels, new students were usually neglected, isolated, and miserable. After all, in the first year of high school, various cliques had already formed, and it was difficult for someone like him who wasn't proactive to truly integrate into the class.

Lin Qiye was well aware that he wasn't the proactive type.

Even if he had been with them since the first year of high school, with his aloof temperament, he would probably still be alone.

But being alone wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At least Lin Qiye enjoyed this feeling, undisturbed, focusing on his studies…

If he were forced to build relationships with others, he wouldn't be able to do it.

Standing at the door of the classroom, Lin Qiye took a deep breath, calmed his mind, and stepped inside.

The moment Lin Qiye entered the classroom, the previously noisy atmosphere suddenly quieted down…

One second, two seconds, three seconds…

Just as Lin Qiye was about to say something, the classroom erupted!

"You must be Lin Qiye, right? Your seat is already prepared, it's over there."

"Lin Qiye, can you not see? I'll take you there."

"Classmate, walk slower, there are a lot of things on the aisle… Hey, you, quickly put away your bag!"

"…"

Before Lin Qiye could react, several classmates had already approached him and carefully led him to his seat. There was even a tall boy who took Lin Qiye's bag and carried it on his shoulder.

With a group of people surrounding him, Lin Qiye safely arrived at his seat.

Lin Qiye: …?

How is this different from the script?

"I'm Jiang Qian, the class monitor. If you need anything, you can find me." A girl with a ponytail patted her chest and said.

"I'm Li Yifei, if you want to have lunch, just call me and I'll take you." The guy who helped him with his bag smiled.

"And me, I'm Wang Shao…"

"…"

Many people gathered around him, warmly greeting him.

For a moment, Lin Qiye felt a bit lost.

To be honest, this was quite different from what he had imagined.

"Do you all know me?" Lin Qiye's expression was a bit strange.

"Our homeroom teacher told us about you." Class monitor Jiang Qian replied, "But what impressed us the most was your aunt. That day, she stood here with a basket of eggs and gave each of us an egg, asking us to take care of you…"

A thunderous roar seemed to sound in Lin Qiye's mind, and he stood frozen in place.

He couldn't hear what the other classmates said next, he just stared blankly at the classroom, with images of the middle-aged woman with a hunched back, holding a basket of freshly boiled eggs, earnestly asking her classmates for help, appearing involuntarily in his mind.

"Classmates, please help me. My nephew's eyesight isn't very good, and he's cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Please take care of him…"

"Young lady, you're so beautiful. My nephew is also very handsome, you'll definitely like him…"

"This child, Lin Qiye, is cold on the outside but warm on the inside. As long as you get to know him, you'll get along well…"

"…"

At some point, the black ribbon became slightly damp.

"Aunt…" he murmured to himself.

While everyone was chatting, a female teacher walked in, holding books. When she saw Lin Qiye sitting in the front row, she first came up to offer her condolences, then briefly introduced him to everyone before starting the class.

"Turn to page ninety in your textbooks. Today, we will talk about the history and challenges of the Great Xia in modern times…"

Perhaps because of the addition of Lin Qiye, the teacher skipped the usual process of skimming through the textbook and directly explained its contents.

"A hundred years ago, there were still over two hundred countries on Earth, distributed across seven continents and four oceans. Each had its own customs and cultures. Even in that era when technology wasn't advanced, we could still travel by ship to different countries and experience the collision of cultures…"

"However, on March 9th, a mysterious fog suddenly appeared in Antarctica, and then spread at an astonishing speed, engulfing nearly 98% of the Earth's surface within 24 hours.""Skyscrapers built by humans, ancient primeval forests, bottomless oceans… Everything was shrouded in a mysterious fog. Countless countries fell into the fog, losing all contact."

"However, this inexplicable fog stopped just as it was about to invade the territory of The Great Xia."

"No one knew why, but it just bizarrely stopped."

"Over the centuries, countless theories and conjectures were proposed. Some said that the fog was actually a creature that, after consuming 98% of the Earth, was finally satiated and thus stopped near The Great Xia. Others suggested that the location of The Great Xia had a special magnetic field that hindered the spread of the fog. There were also those who believed that it was the accumulated heritage of The Great Xia over five thousand years that was protecting the land…"

"The composition of this fog completely exceeded human understanding. Whether it was light, sound, radio waves, or any other detection methods, none could penetrate this fog. No one knew whether the other countries, swallowed by the fog a century ago, still existed…"

"According to expert speculation, the chances of survival in the fog were extremely low, as inhaling the fog or even skin contact… was lethal!"

"Over the past century, our country has sent countless well-equipped exploration teams into the fog, but not a single person has returned."

"Fifty years ago, our country successfully launched its first satellite. The images transmitted back from space showed that the entire Earth had turned a grayish-white color, with only The Great Xia remaining as a sanctuary."

"The Great Xia now is like an isolated island on this planet, and we… perhaps are the last survivors on this planet."

"Therefore, the day the fog appeared, which is March 9th each year, is referred to as 'Survivor's Day'."
