Chapter 39 – Cram school

“Ding dong – Welcome!”

With a crisp and pleasant electronic sound, Lin Qiye pushed open the door of the office and walked in.

As soon as he entered, he froze in place.

On the sofa in the office, there was an old lady in her fifties, leaning on a cane and holding a pair of reading glasses. She was energetically describing something with hand gestures.

“…Ah, let me tell you! My old man, is he acting strange or not!

Before, when we went out together, he would always hold my hand, afraid that something unexpected would happen. But since last week, he has been acting like this!

He must have another woman outside!”

Across from her, Hong Ying was propping up her cheek, listening attentively and occasionally responding in surprise:

“Ah? Is he really that excessive?”

“Mhm, I think you’re right, Grandma!”

“He’s so excessive!”

“Don’t worry, our office will handle this matter!”

“…”

Beside her, Wen Qimo also sat there with a serious expression, maintaining a gentle smile:

“I think you’re right, Grandma…”

“I think you’re right, Hong Ying…”

“Yes, I think you’re all right…”

Seeing Lin Qiye standing blankly at the door, Wen Qimo gave him a look, stood up, and followed Lin Qiye to the back of the office.

Hong Ying remained seated, chatting enthusiastically with the old lady.

“What… what’s going on?”

As they entered the underground corridor, Lin Qiye couldn’t help but ask.

“Hmm? Just normal work, isn’t it?”

“I thought the storefront above was just a disguise, but it actually has real business?”

“Qi Ye, you still don’t understand enough.” Wen Qimo patted his shoulder. “This city of Cangnan, it’s neither big nor small, and mysterious incidents do happen, but only about five or six times a year.

When we, this group of people, don’t have any mysterious incidents to deal with, we either train or chat. It’s so boring.”

“So, you also expanded the business of investigating extramarital affairs for people?” Lin Qiye’s expression was very strange. “And it’s an old lady in her fifties?”

“The old lady is sixty this year.”

“…”

“You see, we usually take on some trivial tasks that don’t hurt or itch. It’s a good way to find something to do and earn some extra money!”

“In that case…” Lin Qiye pondered, “besides investigating extramarital affairs, do we have any other business?”

“Yes, the business scope is very broad, extremely broad!” Wen Qimo’s eyes lit up. “Helping rescue cats and dogs stuck in trees, providing tutoring for elementary and middle school students, offering legal assistance to those in need, rescuing abducted children, and sometimes even going undercover to apprehend bank robbers…”

“Wait, isn’t the business scope a bit too broad?” Lin Qiye widened his eyes. “Rescue, education, law, relationships, and even police work, you guys do it all?”

“It’s routine.”

“I suddenly became curious, who among you knows about the law?”

“Leng Xuan. Before joining the Night Watchman, he was a law PhD student at the Political and Law University.”

Lin Qiye: ?(??? ?)?

The two walked into the underground activity space, and Wen Qimo patted his shoulder. “By the way, the captain said that when you arrive, go to the training ground to find him.”

“Where is it?”

“Just keep walking down the corridor in front.”

“Okay.”

Lin Qiye walked through the activity room and continued forward along the corridor.

He didn’t pay attention last time he came, but now, Lin Qiye realized just how big this underground space was.

Long corridors, mysterious rooms, Lin Qiye roughly estimated the size of this space, it was definitely as wide as two streets.

Finally, Lin Qiye reached the end of the corridor, and there was a large iron door in front of him.

Lin Qiye pushed open the door and entered. Inside was a spacious and brightly lit training ground, at least the size of three football fields!

“They… did they dig through the entire bottom of the canal?” Lin Qiye muttered to himself.

Seeing Lin Qiye’s arrival, Chen Muye, who was meditating in the center of the training ground, opened his eyes and waved at him.

“Captain.”

“Yeah, how do you feel about this place?”

“It feels… a bit contrasting.” Lin Qiye honestly replied, “The storefront above is just a small and inconspicuous one, but there’s such a large space below. It feels like a science fiction movie.”

Chen Muye nodded slightly. “This place was built by the owner of a forbidden ruin with earth attributes decades ago, so such a large project didn’t alarm the surface.”

“I see.”

“By the way, some of the documents regarding your joining the Night Watchman have arrived and are stored in the archives. If you want to see them, you can go get them yourself.” Chen Muye paused.

“But your sword, cloak, and emblem will be distributed uniformly after the training. For now, you can use this sword.”

Chen Muye handed a straight sword behind him to Lin Qiye, who took it and examined it. Under the hilt, he saw three small characters.

– Zhao Kongcheng.

“This is…” Lin Qiye looked up in astonishment.

“Old Zhao’s sword.” Chen Muye said calmly, “You were chosen by him. He died in battle, so his sword is entrusted to you.”

After a moment of silence, Lin Qiye silently tightened his grip on the sword hilt. “Alright.”Subsequently, he asked with confusion, “But, wasn’t it said that I’m just a temporary member now? Why do I need to carry a sword?”

“There’s more than a month before the start of the training camp, we can’t waste this time, we need to teach you some things.” Chen Muye slowly stood up, looked at Lin Qiye, and continued:

“After all, you’re going to join our 136th squad. If your performance in the training camp is not good, it will be embarrassing for us.”

Lin Qiye: …

For some reason, Lin Qiye suddenly felt like he was being forcibly sent to a cram school by his elders because of his poor grades…

“That’s fine, how should I train?” Lin Qiye didn’t hesitate. After all, even if Chen Muye didn’t take the initiative to bring it up, he would actively ask him to teach him how to fight.

Life is his own.

Being lazy at this time is like slow death.

“Practice sword with me in the morning, learn how to use the Forbidden Ruin with Wen Qimo in the afternoon, and learn how to use a gun with Leng Xuan in the evening.” Chen Muye took two bamboo swords from a weapon rack nearby and held them in his hands.

“Pick up the sword, we’re starting.”

Lin Qiye glanced at the straight sword beside him and said in surprise, “Captain, this is a real sword!”

“It doesn’t matter.” Chen Muye, expressionless, walked towards Lin Qiye with the two swords, “Anyway, the result is the same.”

For some reason, Lin Qiye felt a tightness in his heart, a vague sense of foreboding.

He picked up the straight sword on the ground, drew the sword from its sheath, and took a deep breath.

“Captain, I’m going in.”

Chen Muye nodded, “Come on, go ahead.”

Lin Qiye’s eyes focused, he gripped the sword handle, and quickly rushed towards Chen Muye!

Three seconds later, his screams echoed throughout the basement…
