When He Ju and Si Hua woke up again on the train, it was already night. They couldn’t see anything outside, and the cell phone signal was weak.
He Ju got up to make some instant noodles. On the train, they made do with what they had.
While He Ju was preparing the noodles, Si Hua took out her tablet, found the TV dramas she had downloaded, and happily waited for him to return.
It might be cold outside, but Si Hua was cozy with a hot water bottle in her arms and a warm patch on her waist. She felt as blissful and content as the warm patch itself.
In truth, as long as she was with He Ju, Si Hua didn’t care about their surroundings.
After making the instant noodles in the hot water room, He Ju didn’t rush back to their compartment. Instead, he sat by the dining car window, gazing at the blurry scenery rushing by.
He wasn’t the only one on the train. An older man sat across from He Ju.
The man asked, “Brother, what’s on your mind?”
He Ju came back to reality, saw the man drinking a beer, and smiled, “Just thinking about my past self.”
The man laughed heartily, “It’s all in the past, what’s there to think about?”
He called over a young lady and got two more beers, but He Ju politely declined, “Sorry, my wife is waiting for me.”
The man didn’t insist and just drank by himself before saying, “Brother, you don’t look like someone short on cash, so why the long face?”
He Ju was taken aback. Short on cash?
It had been a long time since he’d been short on money, not like the old days when he had to scrimp and save just to buy a ring.
The instant noodles on the table, once a staple for He Ju, were now just a seasoning in life.
He Ju chuckled, “Yes, I should be content.”
The man looked at He Ju for a while and then asked, “Brother, do you have a dream?”
A dream?
He Ju felt a moment of confusion. It was then he remembered, as a very young child when his mother asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he had said with a tender voice, “Mom, I want to be a soldier…”
That was a distant memory, so far back that he wouldn’t have recalled it if not prompted.
Now, he was just a businessman, one that many in City A were wary of.
He Ju smiled, “It’s been so long, I can hardly remember. Like you said, the past is the past. The people in front of us are what matter most, right?”
“Don’t just talk about me. Where are you headed, brother?”
The man took another swig, “No destination. Wherever I end up is where I’ll be.”
Now it was He Ju’s turn to be curious, “Are you traveling alone, brother?”
The man nodded, sighing, “Yes, alone. My wife passed away from cancer, and my daughter died in a car accident just as she came of age. I’m… unencumbered…”
He said this with a smile, but tears twinkled in his eyes, “Young man, in life, no amount of money is as important as the people by your side. I always used earning money as an excuse to wander and not return home. Now, I… have no home.”
He Ju felt a mix of emotions.
The man continued, “As a man, when you’re young, you always want to go out and make your mark. But in the blink of an eye, decades pass, and looking back, I didn’t make the money, and I didn’t keep the people.”
Staggering to his feet, the man said, “In the end, I ended up with nothing…”
He left without needing He Ju’s help.
They were just strangers who met by chance, not knowing each other’s names or statuses, but this encounter made He Ju cherish his current life even more.
He Ju left the dining car with his instant noodles, knowing he too would have a home to return to.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too, but wasn’t his current life exactly what He Ju had always dreamed of?
Back in the compartment, Si Hua rushed over, her fair face full of excitement, “It smells so good, husband, you’ve worked hard~”
While saying it was hard work, her eyes were fixed on the instant noodles, and her hands couldn’t wait to take them.
He Ju couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re such a little glutton.”
Si Hua giggled, her eyes crescent-shaped and very pretty, her voice sweet, “That’s because everything is exciting when I’m with you.”
He Ju couldn’t resist ruffling Si Hua’s hair, “You always make me love you a little more each day.”
Si Hua put down the noodles, hugged He Ju’s hand, and looked up at him with anticipation, “That’s great. Loving more each day means we’ll have lots and lots of love, and we’ll both be very happy.”
He Ju looked down at Si Hua, “Yes, we will be very happy.”
Si Hua playfully blinked, “Then can I have a little bit of your instant noodles? Just a little!”
He Ju was speechless… So that was her little scheme?
He Ju feigned arrogance, “No!”
Si Hua stood up and planted a kiss on He Ju’s face, “Oh, just a little bit, please, husband~”
Her coquettish voice made He Ju’s whole body tingle.
He Ju still refused, but Si Hua didn’t get angry and kept pestering him softly until he couldn’t take it anymore and agreed. Si Hua immediately smiled like a fox.
He Ju secretly rejoiced in his heart.
With such a wife, he indeed should be content.
The days ahead would be about making money and providing for a beautiful wife.
It seemed there was some truth to the saying that pampering your wife leads to wealth.
At least for those around He Ju who pampered their wives, life didn’t seem too bad.
He Ju’s gaze at Si Hua became even more tender.
The couple finished their instant noodles in harmony, washed up, and then cuddled up in bed to watch a comedy on TV, laughing until tears flowed.
It had been a long time since He Ju and Si Hua had relaxed like this, so they thoroughly enjoyed this moment.
Thus, they spent two carefree, joyful days on the train.
One day, as He Ju was dozing off in bed, Si Hua came over with a durian layer cake, her eyes sparkling, “Quick, quick, quick, the young lady outside gave it to me, it’s delicious.”
He Ju smelled the aroma and felt like he was ascending to heaven, “No, no, you eat it.”
Si Hua held it out to He Ju like a treasure, “It only smells bad, but it tastes great. Try it~ Try it~ You’re the best~”
With no choice, He Ju resignedly took a bite, then opened his eyes in surprise, “I didn’t expect it, it’s actually quite good.”
Si Hua was immediately delighted, “Right? Your wife never lies!”
