Chapter 32 – Closed shopping mall

Yang Jian tortured the merchant for over an hour.

The dog-like merchant was almost on the verge of collapse.

Finally, Yang Jian returned to the phone repair shop and took out the phone that he had implanted in the merchant’s brain.

Yang Jian grabbed the merchant’s collar and said coldly, “You must have swapped other people’s phones many times. Who knows how much money you’ve cheated out of others? Let me tell you, I can be a normal person and do business with you, but I can also be ten times more evil than you and make you regret it. I will pass by here often, and if I see you doing this kind of thing again, I won’t just implant a phone in your brain.”

“Big brother, I won’t do it again, I won’t!” The merchant was scared out of his wits and trembled.

“People like you have no conscience when it comes to making money. When you haven’t been caught, you act arrogantly and accuse others of selling fake goods. You think an apology is enough? That’s too cheap. The cost of cheating someone is so low, no wonder there are so many merchants like you. Today, you’ve suffered a loss and learned a lesson. Be careful with your life next time.”

Yang Jian warned him severely once, then left.

Of course, he also gained 100,000 yuan in the process. He squeezed out all the profits and the merchant probably couldn’t come up with any more money, as he had already borrowed from online lenders.

Although his methods were not honorable, it didn’t matter. Evil people could do it themselves. After all, he had become an existence that was neither human nor ghost. If he couldn’t find that ghost, he wouldn’t live much longer.

“Before I die, I need to earn enough money for my mother’s retirement. It doesn’t matter if my methods are despicable. Otherwise, what will my mother do if I die? Her health is not good…” Yang Jian lowered his head, revealing a sad expression.

“It’s a pity that there are no rewards for supernatural events in China. Otherwise, I could risk it and earn millions or even tens of millions of dollars.”

He wandered aimlessly on the street, looking for opportunities to make money.

Finally, he stopped in front of a utility pole.

There were all kinds of advertisements posted on the pole.

“Reward for having a child, two million yuan.”

“Wu Jiajia, you bitch. How dare you cuckold me? I will kill your whole family.”

“Nothing to do, just want to post an ad.”

“What to do when a man can’t get an erection?”

Yang Jian turned around and suddenly saw a torn advertisement.

It read, “Reward of one million yuan for a master to drive away evil spirits with effective methods.”

There was a phone number and an address below.

Yang Jian hesitated, “Should I try it?”

It could be a scam, but it could also be a real situation where a boss encountered a supernatural event and was looking for a master to solve it. Otherwise, the reward wouldn’t be so high.

“After all, it’s over a million yuan. If I can really earn it, I’ll have half the money for my mother’s retirement.” Yang Jian thought for a moment and decided to go and see for himself instead of calling first to confirm if it was true.

If it was fake, he wouldn’t waste his time.

Immediately, he took a taxi and headed to the address on the advertisement.

On a bustling main road, there were many buildings and residential areas nearby, and there were many people. There was also a large shopping mall by the roadside.

The address on the advertisement was for this mall.

After paying the taxi fare, Yang Jian got out of the car and looked at the mall. There was a police cordon outside that had not been removed yet, indicating that something had happened recently. The mall was also very quiet inside, with no customers and most of the lights turned off, as if it were closed.

Yang Jian walked over and saw several job recruitment ads placed at the entrance, offering a monthly salary of 6,000 yuan and free food and lodging.

“At first glance, it does seem like something has happened, but I don’t know if it’s a supernatural event.”

Without much thought, he walked into the mall.

As soon as he entered, Yang Jian’s face changed slightly.

There was a faint odor, almost imperceptible, but particularly distinct to him because he had smelled it a few days ago at school.

This was… the smell of decay from a decomposing body.

His gaze shifted towards the inside of the mall.

Apart from the area near the entrance where the lights were on, the rest of the mall was dark due to its closure, making it feel somewhat oppressive.

Yang Jian vaguely felt that something was watching him from the depths of the darkness in the mall.

“Step, step, step!”

Suddenly, crisp footsteps echoed in the darkness ahead and gradually approached.

A black shadow emerged from the distance and walked directly towards him without hesitation.

“Sorry, the mall is closed for renovation these days. If you want to buy something, you can go to the small supermarket ahead,” a thin young man in a security uniform emerged from the darkness and said.

“Why were you staring at me like that?” the young security guard asked Yang Jian with a puzzled look.

“…Where did you just go?” Yang Jian asked.

“I went to the bathroom. Is there a problem?” the young security guard replied.

“Why didn’t you turn on the lights in the bathroom?”

“Electricity is expensive, and the boss doesn’t allow it. If you have nothing to do, please leave quickly. We’re not open for business. If someone comes in here, I’ll be in trouble. Last time, a child came in and I almost lost my job looking for him,” the young security guard explained.

“I’m not here to buy anything. I’m here to find your boss,” Yang Jian said.

“The boss is not here today,” the young security guard said.

“When will he be back?” Yang Jian asked.

“The boss is on a business trip and won’t be back for a few days. Why are you asking so many questions? You’re not here to cause trouble, are you?” the young security guard asked.

“No, I’m here to apply for a job,” Yang Jian said.

“Are you aware of the missing persons case that happened in this mall? Someone disappeared here and hasn’t been found yet,” the young security guard said.

“I didn’t know before, but I know now,” Yang Jian said.

“And you still dare to apply for a job here?”

“Why not? The salary is high, and it’s just a missing person, not a ghost,” Yang Jian said.

“Then follow me. I’ll take you to Sister Li. She’s in charge of employee recruitment,” the young security guard said.

They walked into a small shop in the mall where four or five mall employees were sitting on the sofa, doing nothing and looking bored.A middle-aged woman in work uniform raised her head and stood up, smiling: “The mall will open soon, and we are currently short of staff. We are not strict about education or work experience, and the salary is 6,000 yuan per month, including room and board. However, the working hours are a bit long. If there are no problems, when can you start?”

Yang Jian thought for a moment and said, “I can start today.”

“The probation period is three days. We need people for the front desk, purchasing, cashier, security, etc.”

The woman, Li Jie, also mentioned some requirements and working hours.

Yang Jian didn’t listen carefully. His purpose for coming here was not to work, but to meet the boss and earn some money.

“I don’t have much work experience, so I’ll apply for the security position. By the way, I saw someone posting flyers outside before, saying that the boss invited a great master and Taoist priest to drive away evil spirits and perform rituals. Is there such a thing?”

Li Jie’s smile disappeared and she said, “Yes, there is such a thing, but it has nothing to do with you. You are a new employee, so introduce yourself first and let everyone get to know you.”

She seemed to intentionally avoid the topic.

Yang Jian felt that there was indeed something wrong with this mall.
