Chapter 93 – Attacked

The next day.

When Ye Qiu went to work at the hospital, he heard some news.

Guo Danu, devastated by the loss of his son and being fired from the hospital, had a mental breakdown.

He had been sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.

Ye Qiu knew that it wasn’t just a double blow, but a quadruple one. Guo Danu’s wife had not only run off with his money but also cuckolded him.

“People who do too many bad things will eventually get their comeuppance,” Ye Qiu sighed.

After a day of work, he went to find Lin Jingzhi.

Dusk.

Ye Qiu pushed Lin Jingzhi along a path by the lake, the setting sun casting a golden glow on her face, making her look like a fairy, breathtakingly beautiful.

“Sister Lin, was it you who reported Guo Danu?” Ye Qiu asked softly.

“Why do you think it was me?” Lin Jingzhi countered.

“Because whenever I’m in danger, you always step up to protect me.”

In fact, on his way back from the police station yesterday, Ye Qiu had been pondering who could have reported Guo Danu.

And to get him fired from the hospital in just half an hour, it had to be someone extraordinary.

Ye Qiu thought about it and realized that among the people he knew, only the Dragon King, Bai Bing, and Lin Jingzhi had the capability.

Since the Dragon King and Bai Bing were unaware when he was taken by the police, it had to be Lin Jingzhi.

Moreover, the swift and ruthless action was very much in line with Lin Jingzhi’s character.

“Actually, when I found out you had a conflict with Guo Danu and his son, I started investigating them secretly. What I didn’t expect was that both father and son were equally despicable,” Lin Jingzhi said. “In just two years, Guo Danu received over four million yuan in red envelopes. He even demanded red envelopes from patients and their families who couldn’t afford them.”

“Do you know, last year, a child with a severe illness needed a kidney transplant to survive. The hospital had a matching kidney, but Guo Danu refused to arrange the surgery unless he was given fifty thousand yuan.”

“In the end, the child’s parents sold their house to gather the fifty thousand yuan for Guo Danu, only then did they get the kidney.”

“And that’s just one of many examples.”

Lin Jingzhi’s face was full of anger. “It’s not uncommon for doctors to accept red envelopes these days, but someone as unscrupulous as Guo Danu is rare. He’s a disgrace to the medical profession.”

“I always knew Guo Danu wasn’t a good person, but I didn’t realize he was this bad. It’s a good thing the hospital fired him, or who knows how many more people he would have harmed,” Ye Qiu said.

“Ye Qiu, have you ever accepted red envelopes from patients?” Lin Jingzhi suddenly asked.

“I have,” Ye Qiu admitted without hesitation. “Some patients give red envelopes to doctors hoping they’ll be more attentive. At first, I refused, but then Director Bai scolded me.”

“Oh?” Lin Jingzhi sneered. “Bai Bing seems so upright, but she’s greedy too.”

“You misunderstand, Sister Lin. Director Bai sometimes accepts red envelopes, but after treating the patient, she finds a way to return the money. If the patient insists on not taking it back, she deposits it into their hospital fees.”

“Why go through all that trouble? Why not just refuse?” Lin Jingzhi asked, puzzled.

“Patients give red envelopes hoping the doctor will be more attentive. If the doctor refuses, the patient might feel uneasy. Sometimes we temporarily accept the red envelope to reassure the patient. That’s what Director Bai taught me,” Ye Qiu explained.

“I see, I misunderstood Bai Bing,” Lin Jingzhi said.

Ye Qiu asked again, “Does Guo Danu have other issues?”

“Plenty,” Lin Jingzhi replied. “He collaborated with pharmaceutical companies to introduce drugs to Jiangzhou Hospital and took kickbacks. In just a few years, he bought a mansion worth over ten million yuan in downtown Jiangzhou.”

“Moreover, he has a mistress, the head nurse of your hospital’s internal medicine department, who had two abortions for him.”

“Besides these, he has other issues. If he hadn’t been sent to the psychiatric hospital, he would have been imprisoned for at least ten years.”

Ye Qiu was stunned.

He hadn’t expected Guo Danu to have so many problems.

It seemed that being sent to the psychiatric hospital was a good outcome for Guo Danu.

“I used to think Guo Shaocong turned out to be a scumbag because Guo Danu didn’t teach him well. Now I realize Guo Shaocong was just following in his father’s footsteps. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Lin Jingzhi suddenly stopped and looked back at Ye Qiu, saying seriously, “Promise me something, okay?”

“What is it?”

“Always be a good doctor. Treat all your patients equally, whether they are rich or poor. Don’t accept their red envelopes, don’t make unreasonable demands, and uphold medical ethics. Never forget your original intention to save lives,” Lin Jingzhi sighed. “In this era, there are many doctors, but good doctors are too few.”

“Don’t worry, Sister Lin, I won’t let you down,” Ye Qiu said solemnly. “Sister Lin, do you remember what I said before? My greatest dream in life is to become a great doctor.”

“I remember,” Lin Jingzhi said. “As long as you work hard, your dream will come true. No matter what, I will always support you. Keep it up!”

“Sister Lin, you stood up for me at the Crystal Palace last time, and yesterday you helped me deal with Guo Danu. I don’t even know how to thank you.”

Ye Qiu was troubled.

He hated owing people favors, but now he owed Lin Jingzhi too many.

He didn’t know how to repay her.

“If you want to thank me, it’s simple,” Lin Jingzhi said, her eyes sparkling as she teased, “How about you marry me?”

“Okay,” Ye Qiu replied without hesitation.

Lin Jingzhi was stunned for a moment, then burst into a melodious laugh, her chest heaving spectacularly.

“Sister Lin, why are you laughing?”

“I suddenly think you’re quite adorable sometimes.”

Ye Qiu felt a bit disappointed.

What did Sister Lin mean?

Was she gently rejecting him?

Well, she was a goddess, and he didn’t deserve her.

“Push me to the bridge,” Lin Jingzhi said.

Ye Qiu looked up and saw an arched bridge ahead. He pushed Lin Jingzhi onto the bridge.

As soon as they reached the bridge, before they could enjoy the view, a delivery rider in a yellow jacket rushed up from the other end, holding a delivery box and looking anxious.

Suddenly—

Just three meters from Lin Jingzhi, the rider slipped, losing his balance and almost falling.

The delivery box flew out of his hand, tracing an arc in the air before landing in front of Lin Jingzhi with a “smack.”

Lin Jingzhi bent down to pick up the delivery box and asked the rider with concern, “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

Lin Jingzhi smiled and handed the delivery box back to the rider.

“Thank you.”

The rider thanked Lin Jingzhi as he reached for the box.

As his left hand grabbed the box, a sharp knife slipped out from his right sleeve, aiming straight for Lin Jingzhi’s heart.
