Chapter 71 – Special patient

The next day, Ye Qiu went to work.

As soon as he arrived at the clinic, a nurse rushed over and said anxiously, “Dr. Ye, Director Bai wants you to go to her office immediately.”

“Did Director Bai say what she needed me for?” Ye Qiu asked.

“No, but I guess it’s probably related to the patient we admitted this morning.”

“What patient?”

“We admitted a patient this morning, covered in injuries and in very serious condition. Director Bai and several experts are discussing the surgical plan.”

“Alright, I got it.”

Ye Qiu changed into his white coat and quickly headed to the director’s office. Just as he was about to knock, the door opened, and Bai Bing walked out quickly.

“Director Bai, you were looking for me?” Ye Qiu asked.

“Ye Qiu, you’re just in time. Come with me to the operating room,” Bai Bing said as she walked. “There’s a surgery coming up, and I need you to assist me.”

“Alright.”

Ye Qiu followed Bai Bing straight to the operating room.

When they reached the door of the operating room, Ye Qiu noticed that the top experts in surgery were all there, each with a serious expression.

What’s going on?

Ye Qiu was puzzled. These authoritative experts usually only had one or two clinic days a week and rarely gathered together. But today, they were all here, which could only mean that either the patient’s condition was extremely severe or the patient had a very special identity.

Either way, it indicated that today’s surgery would not be simple.

Sure enough, Bai Bing said, “Experts, today’s surgery is a significant challenge for us. I appreciate your hard work.”

“Director Bai, you’re too kind. Saving lives is our duty; it’s not hard work,” said an expert wearing glasses.

“Then I won’t say more. Let’s wish for a successful surgery.”

The group changed into sterile gowns and entered the operating room one after another.

As Ye Qiu entered, he saw an anesthesiologist and five or six staff members, all ready for the surgery.

The patient was a young man lying on the operating table.

Ye Qiu took a glance.

Hiss…

He gasped.

The young man was covered in injuries, and these were no ordinary wounds—they were gunshot and knife wounds.

Some of them were even fatal.

It was a miracle that this young man was still alive.

Only then did Ye Qiu understand why Bai Bing had called in several authoritative experts. The surgery was extremely difficult, and it was uncertain whether the young man could survive until the end of the operation.

Bai Bing said, “The patient’s injuries are severe, so we must race against time. According to the pre-determined surgical plan, the experts and I will operate on the patient simultaneously. If there are no objections, let’s begin.”

“Alright, let’s start!”

The surgery officially began.

As an assistant, Ye Qiu’s task was to assist Bai Bing. Whenever Bai Bing extracted a bullet from the patient, he would quickly wipe away the blood with gauze, disinfect with an alcohol swab, and then suture the wound before moving on to the next injury.

Time ticked by, minute by minute.

One hour.

Two hours.

The surgery proceeded in an orderly manner.

Three hours passed.

Finally, Bai Bing and the experts paused.

By now, they had removed seventeen bullets and sutured nine knife wounds from the young man’s body.

“Director Bai, there are only two fatal wounds left,” one expert said.

Another expert added, “These two fatal wounds are near the heart and the carotid artery, both difficult to treat.”

“Not to sound pessimistic, but the success rate for these two surgeries is very low,” another expert said.

“No matter how low the success rate, we must treat them,” said an elderly expert with graying hair. “We’ve come this far; we can’t give up now.”

“I’m not suggesting we give up. I’m saying these two fatal wounds are in very tricky locations. If the patient experiences massive bleeding during the surgery, it will be a big problem.”

Bai Bing said, “No matter how problematic, we must treat it. We are doctors; our purpose is to save lives, isn’t it?”

“Director Bai, you’re right. However, I suggest we prepare a contingency plan. The likelihood of massive bleeding during surgery is high,” one expert said.

Another expert followed, “Although the previous surgeries went smoothly, the remaining two fatal wounds are very challenging. Any slight mistake could be fatal. A contingency plan is necessary.”

The elderly expert said, “But if we prepare a contingency plan now, we might run out of time.”

Bai Bing frowned. It was indeed a troublesome matter. After thinking for a moment, she quickly made a decision.

“Time is of the essence. Continue the surgery. If the patient experiences massive bleeding, we’ll perform emergency measures.”

With that, Bai Bing began to extract the bullet from the patient.

Seeing her take action, the experts also started.

Because the two bullets were only a millimeter away from the carotid artery and the heart, Bai Bing and the experts were extremely cautious, and their extraction speed was very slow.

The atmosphere in the operating room became tense.

Thirty minutes later.

Bai Bing finally extracted the bullet from the patient’s wound. Only then did her brows slightly relax.

Immediately after, with a “ding,” the experts also extracted the bullet near the patient’s heart and tossed it into a tray.

“Phew~”

Everyone exhaled deeply, looking at each other with smiles on their faces.

The surgery was a success!

“Clean the wound! Prepare for suturing!”

After giving instructions, Bai Bing and the experts stepped back a few paces, leaving the operating table to the assistants.

Ye Qiu immediately stepped forward to clean the patient’s wound. Suddenly, a stream of blood spurted from the wound, splattering all over Ye Qiu’s hands.

Massive bleeding!

Before Ye Qiu could react, another female assistant exclaimed, “Oh no, the patient is bleeding heavily.”

Ye Qiu quickly applied hemostatic measures and looked up, noticing that the wound near the patient’s heart was also bleeding profusely, with blood gushing out like water, indicating a ruptured blood vessel.

Bai Bing hurriedly said, “Stop the bleeding immediately.”

“The bleeding won’t stop.”

“Even if it won’t stop, we have to try…”

The female assistant, on the verge of tears, said, “It’s still not stopping. Director Bai, please think of something.”

“Let me try,” an expert stepped forward.

“You step aside too,” Bai Bing pushed Ye Qiu away and took over.

However, neither Bai Bing nor the expert could stop the bleeding.

“This is bad. The patient’s heartbeat is rapidly weakening.”

“Blood pressure is also plummeting.”

“We must perform emergency measures immediately.”

The situation was extremely critical.

At this moment, Ye Qiu said, “Director Bai, let me try!”
