Chapter 2 – Angel on the moon

The room fell into a brief silence.

After a few seconds, Dr. Li came back to his senses. "Seraph?"

"Yes."

"What is It doing?"

"It hasn't done anything. It's like a golden sculpture, sitting in the center of a huge moon crater, looking up at the Earth, as if… watching over it?"

Dr. Li rubbed his eyes and sighed helplessly. "Qi Ye, do you know how far the moon is from the Earth?"

"Nearly four hundred thousand kilometers," Lin Qiye replied calmly.

"Nearly four hundred thousand kilometers," Dr. Li repeated. "Even with the most advanced astronomical telescope, you can only barely see the surface of the moon. And yet, when you were seven years old, you saw an angel on the moon with your naked eyes?"

"It wasn't me who saw It," Lin Qiye said softly. "It saw me. I just looked up, and my eyes were dragged through space, meeting Its gaze."

"So, It forced you to see It?"

"You could say that. Otherwise, how could I see the surface of the moon? I don't have clairvoyance."

"But if there really is an angel on the moon, why hasn't it been discovered by humans all these years?"

"I don't know," Lin Qiye shook his head. "Perhaps that Seraph doesn't want to be observed. Besides… do humans really understand the moon?"

Lin Qiye spoke sincerely, so sincerely that Dr. Li immediately wanted to call a car to take him back to the mental hospital.

After all, Dr. Li was a psychiatrist who had seen all kinds of mental illnesses. He had summarized a rule in his medical career: the more serious the illness, the more serious the patient's seemingly reasonable and serious nonsense.

"So, what about your eyes? What happened to them?"

Lin Qiye reached out and gently rubbed the black cloth on his eyes. There was no emotional fluctuation in his voice as he spoke. "That day, when I met Its gaze for a moment, then… I went blind."

Dr. Li opened his mouth, looked down at the medical record in his hand, and fell into silence.

In the column for the cause of blindness, only two words were written.

Cause unknown.

So… what really happened back then?

Could it be true, as Lin Qiye said, that he saw a Seraph on the moon? Otherwise, how could sudden blindness be explained?

This thought only lasted for a moment before Dr. Li directly suppressed it.

Almost! He almost got led astray by a mentally ill patient!

He could almost imagine the expressions of the doctors when young Lin Qiye, who had gone blind ten years ago, spoke those words in front of them.

No wonder this child was forced to stay in the hospital. No matter how you looked at it, what he said was something only a mentally ill person would say.

There were quite a few people like him in the hospital. Some claimed to be Sun Wukong reincarnated and hung on the horizontal bar all day, some thought they were coat racks standing still in their rooms all night, and some thought everyone looked like their husbands and would secretly touch their buttocks…

Hmm, the last patient was a greasy middle-aged man.

"What you're talking about is all in the past. What about now? How do you view this matter?" Dr. Li adjusted his emotions and continued with the examination process.

"It's all delusions," Lin Qiye calmly replied. "That day, I just accidentally fell from the roof and hit my head on the ground. As for my eyes, it's possible that a nerve was damaged, causing blindness."

He had said these words countless times, proficiently and calmly.

Dr. Li raised an eyebrow, wrote something on the medical record, and then chatted with Lin Qiye about daily life. After about twenty minutes, he glanced at the time, stood up with a smile, and shook hands with Lin Qiye, encouraging him.

Lin Qiye smiled and nodded slightly.

"Oh, Dr. Li, stay for a meal," Auntie said, warmly inviting him as Dr. Li was leaving.

"No, no, I have another patient to see. I won't disturb you," Dr. Li politely declined Auntie's invitation, bid her farewell, and then pushed the door open to leave.

In the instant the door closed, Lin Qiye's smile disappeared as if it had never existed.

"Delusions…?" he murmured to himself.

"Brother, it's time to eat!" Yang Jin, his cousin, walked out of the kitchen with a plate of food and called out.

Yang Jin was Auntie's son, four years younger than Lin Qiye. He had just started middle school. Since Lin Qiye's parents went missing and he stayed at Auntie's house, the two of them had grown up together, closer than real brothers.

"I'm coming," Lin Qiye replied.

Just as Lin Qiye sat down at the small dining table, a warm sensation spread from his feet. He was momentarily stunned, then a faint smile appeared on his lips.

Yang Jin glanced under the table and jokingly scolded, "You lazy little black pox. You're always so sluggish, but when it's time to eat, you're faster than anyone else."

A small black and spotted dog stuck its head out from under the table, its tongue hanging out of its mouth, panting and emitting hot air. It moved closer to Lin Qiye, licking his feet, its face full of affection.

Three people and a dog, this was their family.

Simple, difficult, yet strangely comforting.

Ten years had passed like this.

Lin Qiye patted its head, picked out a piece of meat from the few in his plate, and put it in Yang Jin's bowl.

"Give it a bone to chew on."

Yang Jin didn't refuse. With their brotherly bond, saying more would make it seem awkward. He was concerned about something else.

"Brother, are your eyes really almost healed?"

Lin Qiye smiled faintly. "Yes, I can see now, but I still can't tolerate bright light. I'll have to keep wearing this black cloth for a few more days."

"A few more days? Little Qi, Auntie told me to remind you that eyes are very important. Even if you can see now, don't rush to take off the black cloth. What if… what if the sun damages your eyes again? That would be such a pity! Let's be cautious and wear it for a little longer!" Auntie hurriedly reminded.

"I understand, Auntie."

"Oh, by the way, Brother, I saved up some money to buy you a cool pair of sunglasses. I'll show them to you later!" Yang Jin seemed to have thought of something and said excitedly.

Lin Qiye shook his head with a smile. "Jin, although sunglasses can block the light, they are far less effective than the black cloth. I can't wear them yet."

"Alright…" Yang Jin sounded somewhat disappointed.

"But once my eyes are completely healed, I'll take it out every day, and I'll buy you a pair too. We can go together."

Upon hearing this, Yang Jin's eyes lit up again, and he nodded heavily.

"Little Qi, your aunt has already prepared everything for your transfer. Once this term starts, you'll be able to transfer from the special school to a regular high school." His aunt seemed to have thought of something and said, "But, are you sure about this? Regular high schools and special schools are not the same. Given your situation, what if…"

"There's no 'what if', Aunt." Lin Qiye interrupted her, "My eyes are already healed, and if I want to get into a good university, I have to be on the same starting line as everyone else."

"You child… Even if you don't get into a good university, it's okay. Your aunt can always support you!"

"Bro, I can support you too!"

Lin Qiye's body trembled slightly. Under the black satin, no one knew what his eyes looked like. His lips pursed, then curved into a smile.

He shook his head firmly.

He didn't say anything, but both Yang Jin and his aunt could feel his determination.

Even Little Black Pox, at his feet, rubbed against Lin Qiye's ankle.

"Woof!"
