Chapter 41 – The reappearing stench of a corpse

The next day, Yang Jian woke up early.

Since becoming a spirit tamer, he had acquired the Ghost Eye, and gradually began to notice changes in his body.

The most obvious change was that he found himself sleeping less and less, but he wasn’t tired.

“Only six hours of sleep?”

Yang Jian washed his face and looked at his reflection in the mirror.

He didn’t look haggard, in fact, he exuded an aloof and unfamiliar aura.

He looked at the red paper on the back of his hand.

After a night’s sleep, he didn’t feel the torment of the Ghost Eye’s revival, and slept soundly.

But there was a barely noticeable crack on the red paper.

“Is this just treating the symptoms and not the root cause? Or is it because it’s just a piece of a fragment and not complete?” Yang Jian rubbed his head.

“It seems that finding a way to solve this half-dead situation is not as easy as I thought.”

Indeed.

The global catastrophe, paranormal events happening all over the world.

No one among the spirit tamers had figured out a way to survive, how could he alone come up with a solution?

The red paper could suppress the revival of the spirits, but he had stumbled upon it by accident.

“Wait, hold on.”

Suddenly, Yang Jian remembered the sheepskin scroll.

He took out the sheepskin scroll he carried with him from his pocket and opened it.

There was a line of words on the sheepskin scroll:

“I woke up very early today and gradually realized that my body was being affected by the Ghost Eye. This influence is happening gradually, because I have been sleeping less and less in recent days… I heard that ghosts don’t need to sleep, and maybe that’s true.”

“When I got you from Fang Jing, he said you knew how spirit tamers could survive. I don’t think he was lying, so you must have the key clues.”

Yang Jian stared at the sheepskin scroll. “If you’re willing to tell me, I will reconsider your existence.”

Words suddenly appeared on the sheepskin scroll: “I really want to survive. I am beginning to experience the pain of being a spirit tamer, the pressure of death, the fear of the spirits reviving, and the changes in myself… This is not something I should be enduring at my age. Today, I couldn’t help but ask that strange human skin again, but I didn’t get the answer I wanted… Maybe that human skin is hiding something.”

What was it hiding?

Yang Jian’s face changed as he read the words on the scroll.

When he was at school, he had once thought that the sheepskin scroll had a consciousness of its own, but since leaving school, the sheepskin scroll had lost its ability to guide him.

On that day, if it weren’t for the guidance of the sheepskin scroll in the old man’s ghost realm, he wouldn’t have been able to leave alive.”Since you’re not giving me any information, you’re useless. I’ll just burn you, so I don’t have to carry a piece of human skin around all day.”

After finishing his hygiene routine, Yang Jian took the ghostly object and threw it onto the gas stove.

He lit the fire.

However, the sheepskin paper remained completely intact under the natural gas flame.

The fire couldn’t destroy it at all.

“Yang Jian, are you burning something? Are you cooking noodles?” Liu Qiang smelled the natural gas and ran out of the room.

Yang Jian looked at the sheepskin paper that was still intact and his mouth twitched. “I’m not burning anything. I’m just testing if this stove works.”

“If you’re cooking noodles, I have some ham sausages here.” Liu Qiang said.

“I have some too.”

“I guess I should bury this thing in a place where no one can find it.” Yang Jian frowned slightly.

He couldn’t leave such a strange thing behind, even if he was going to die.

Just as he was about to put the human skin paper away, a line of words suddenly appeared on it: “I can’t get any useful information from this sheepskin paper anymore. For future plans, I plan to discard this sheepskin paper and not let anyone else find it. But I’m thinking, if I can use this sheepskin paper to catch a ghost, maybe I can get the answer I want.”

“Catch a ghost? I think you’re trying to trick me into dying.” Yang Jian glanced at it and didn’t believe the ghostly words. He just put it away and planned to bury it somewhere in a few days.

Two hours later.

The mall opened.

Although it was still closed, Yang Jian and Liu Qiang still had to work.

At 8:30, they started patrolling.

“By the way, the elevator was closed yesterday, right? Why is it open now?” Yang Jian stood on the handrail of the elevator and suddenly remembered that they had turned off the lights and closed the elevator before going to rest yesterday.

It shouldn’t have opened so early in the morning.

“Lijie has the key here. Look, the mall door is already open. I heard the boss might come back today, maybe Lijie has already prepared. Why do you care about this?” Liu Qiang was a little puzzled.

“Nothing, just asking.” Yang Jian said.

Today, all the lights in the mall were turned on, which was different from the usual dark and dim environment.

After patrolling around, Yang Jian didn’t find anything unusual.

Everything was normal.

But this normality made Yang Jian feel uneasy.

If he couldn’t find the problem, then there shouldn’t be any paranormal events in the mall. But why were people missing?

And Yang Jian had a feeling that something was wrong in the mall.

But he couldn’t put his finger on it.

However, at around ten o’clock.

Several luxury cars parked at the mall entrance.

A group of people got out of the cars.

The leader was a middle-aged man in a suit who was a little short.”The boss is here, be careful. The mall has been closed recently, and the boss’s temper is not very good,” Liu Qiang whispered.

The short middle-aged man was surnamed Tang, named Tang An, and was the boss of this mall. He used to work in real estate, but changed his career in recent years and opened this mall.

“Master Luo, this is my mall. Please take a look and see what’s wrong with it. There have been people missing every other day for the past three days. Watch your step, Master Luo…” Tang An had a flattering smile on his face as he led a greasy-faced man in his fifties.

Three to five followers trailed behind him.

The man called Master Luo gestured suddenly and said, “We can’t enter from the main entrance. Are there any other entrances to this mall?”

“Yes, there is a delivery entrance,” Tang An quickly replied.

“Then let’s enter through there and take a look,” Master Luo said.

Yang Jian at the door saw this scene and his lips twitched.

This was definitely a swindler from the Jianghu.

All talk, just trying to fool people.

Everyone entered and exited through the main entrance, even the guests. Why couldn’t they meet this so-called master? Even if there were ghosts, they should have been discovered during their patrols.

Unless this Master Luo was also a ghost handler, and even more skilled than himself.

But looking at his greasy face and energetic appearance, it was impossible for him to be a ghost handler.

“You guys stay here and don’t let anyone else in. I’ll call you if there’s anything,” Li Jie hurried over and said, taking a few female colleagues to greet the boss.

Master Luo entered the mall through a side door, leading Tang An, the manager, Li Jie, and a group of people around the mall, looking left and right, then nodded and showed a knowing look. It seemed that he had completely understood the strange things happening in the mall, but he didn’t really understand what he had figured out.

He had already planned out the script in his mind.

Yang Jian wasn’t interested. Although he knew that this Master Luo was a swindler from the Jianghu, he didn’t bother to expose him.

If there really was no supernatural event, then this one million would just be earned by the swindler. It wouldn’t be his turn anyway.

“Hmm?”

However, at this moment, Yang Jian’s nose twitched, and he smelled a faint smell of corpses again.

“That smell is back. This time, it seems… very close, because the smell is stronger than before.”

He turned around and surveyed the mall, but everything was still calm and nothing had happened.
